Mathematics Resources

Here are resources to support learning and teaching in mathematics.

How do we figure out where a student’s gaps are and then what do we do?

Student Achievement Partners has a Tool for that! The Coherence Map can be used to back-map, to identify gaps in a student's knowledge by tracing a standard back through its logical prerequisites. It contains aligned tasks, items, and assessments to use with individual students and small and large groups.

Learning Trajectories can be used to forward-map to accelerate learning along a research-based pathway. A tool for early childhood educators to learn about how children think and learn about mathematics and how to teach mathematics to young children (birth to age 8). The website provides teachers with access to information about Learning Trajectories for math.

General Resources

  • The Iowa Department of Education has a terrific website to support mathematics standards in the Iowa Core. Check it out at Iowa Core for Mathematics
  • Iowa ASCD continues to develop a curated and annotated list of useful web resources for mathematics.
  • Achieve the Core has created a Coherence Map for mathematics showing how the standards relate to each other within and among grade levels.
  • Front Row has over 30,000+ math questions and 180+ ELA articles each at 5 different reading levels, covering all K-8 standards. Students start off with a diagnostic, and our algorithms show them problems exactly at their skill level.
  • Illustrative Mathematics provides carefully vetted instructional and assessment tasks, lesson plans, and other resources for K-12 teachers. Founded in 2011 at the University of Arizona, we have operated since 2013 as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
  • Manga High provides free online educational games designed to teach students in grades 1 through 10 various math skills.
  • Math Playground contains a variety of math games for elementary students to practice math skills.
  • The Mathematical Practices Institute (MPI) has a number of resources for students of all grade levels as well as for teachers' professional learning.
  • Inside Mathematics provides FREE lessons that were tested with children and groups of observing teachers; guided tours of reflective mathematics practice, identifying what makes teaching, learning, and improving instruction in mathematics a difficult enterprise and providing resources for teachers to improve their practice; tools and resources for supporting daily practice, and a professional learning community in which you are invited to open your own classroom door and engage in conversation about your own mathematics teaching and learning.
  • YouCubed is a site filled with mathematical resources and supports for educators, parents, and students. In this site are online teacher courses, ideas and tasks to use when learning mathematics, brain science about mathematics, books to read, resources for parents and students, and lots more!
  • GeoGebra is FREE dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that brings together geometry, algebra, spreadsheets, graphing, statistics and calculus in one easy-to-use package. GeoGebra has become the leading provider of dynamic mathematics software, supporting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and innovations in teaching and learning worldwide.

Desmos wants to help every student learn math and love learning math. But “every student” is a lot of students so we create digital math tools and let the Internet take them to anyone who wants them.

We built the best-in-class HTML5 Desmos graphing calculator, which millions of students around the world use for free. That calculator catches stellar reviews in app stores and from happy users on Twitter. We also create activities on top of that calculator, helping students use a powerful tool to experience all the curiosity, beauty, and sense that math has to offer. Those activities were used so often by so many teachers around the world that we decided to create an Activity Builder, helping every teacher create digital math activities that equal and exceed the activities we create ourselves.
